Finnish Langh Group Cargo Solutions selected Outokumpu’s new high-chromium austenitic steel grade Outokumpu 316plusTM (Outokumpu 4420) as main building material for their portable tank container that is T11 and ADR approved.  

Steel grade was chosen, because of combination of its technical properties and attractive price. 316plus has higher strength compared to 316(L) that allows thinner walls for the tank container.

“We needed a strong material for corrosive environment and Outokumpu offered the 316plus as a new alternative.  The new grade has even better properties than 316L and its corrosion resistance allows thinner container walls. That in turn results in lighter weight and increases the load that the tank is able to carry. As 316plus is a new grade we had to get official approvals from Lloyd’s Register to use it in T11 tank that will carry corrosive liquids. 316plus passed the material tests without any problems,” says Markku Yli-Kahri from Langh Group Cargo Solutions.

316plus accepted as UNS S31655 into the ASTM A240

Outokumpu 316plus is a unique product developed by Outokumpu that provides a competitive alternative for 316(L), because it contains less nickel and molybdenum yet the corrosion resistance is higher. The grade has been accepted as UNS S31655 into the ASTM A240 standard, European standardization is on-going. 

“316plus is a competitive alternative for the customers who have currently chosen 316(L) as handling and welding of the 316plus is similar to standard austenitic grades. Customers can use familiar tooling and welding techniques in construction. Higher strength allows thinner walls resulting in lower container weight like in this particular case,” says Juha Kela, Product Manager of 316plus at Outokumpu.

Tank will be at display at international container exhibition and conference Intermodal Asia 2015 on March 24-26 in Shanghai, China and at Outokumpu Experience on May 27–28, in Berlin, Germany.
